Big Delta Bluff Summer Route

In my honest opinion, the view from the prominent bluff above the confluence of the Delta and Tanana Rivers offers the most spectacular view in all of lowland interior Alaska. Look out across the vast forests and winding braids of the Delta River to the icy peaks of the Alaska Range. Look straight down the cliff to the churning waters of the Tanana. And look up at the eagles soaring on thermals, searching for a meal.
From the center of Delta, drive 9.5 miles to the Tanana River Bridge. Just on the far side of the bridge, park on the west side of the road. Walk along the highway, away from the bridge until you see a small trail leading very steeply up the hill. This path is indeed exceptionally steep. Someone has even installed ropes along part of it. There are some substantial erosion issues here, and a better trail really should be built up the bluff. Once the angle eases off, you quickly and dramatically come out into the open at the top of the cliff, immediately above the highway bridge. A path leads along the cliff edge for a third of a mile or so. Take care here, since some spots have a steep drop off right down to the river. The path eventually peters out, but you can follow the open sage area all the way down to the edge of the river, without too much trouble.
If the steep trail doesn’t sound like any fun, it’s also possible to take the winter route. Turn onto Hanson’s Hollow road, and park immediately at a wide spot. Carefully cross the highway and find the power line trail that leads up the hill. Where the power line takes a right turn, take a left into the woods and find your way (there isn’t a trail) to the top of the bluff. It’s pretty short off trail, with few downed trees or brush issues if you pick your route carefully. This route is about a half mile, one way.
Right across the river, Rika’s Roadhouse is also a great place to go for a walk and have a picnic by the waters of the Tanana.
